Quantinuum announced a non-binding memorandum of understanding with Aramco on September 3rd, signed at a ceremony in Riyadh, to explore industrial quantum computing use cases and prepare for a potential deeper research collaboration focused on fault-tolerant quantum computing. Under the agreement, the two companies plan to undertake preliminary technical onboarding and knowledge exchange, identify Aramco's specific challenges suited to quantum computing research with an emphasis on energy and digital transformation problems, and benchmark different quantum computing modalities against each other

Quantinuum CEO Rajeeb Hazra said organizations that expect to benefit from quantum computing need to begin developing their expertise, algorithms and workflows today, framing the MOU as a structured way to exchange expertise and identify important industrial challenges ahead of any deeper commitment. The agreement complements Aramco's existing initiatives to position itself as a leader in applying advanced quantum technologies within the energy industry specifically. Quantinuum uses trapped-ion quantum systems built on its QCCD architecture, which the company says achieves the industry's highest reported accuracy levels based on average two-qubit gate fidelity

The deal was signed at LEAP, a major Saudi technology conference, and adds to a growing list of quantum computing partnerships the kingdom has pursued recently, including Pasqal and Imperial College London partnerships announced through the Quantum Forum earlier this year.
