A Thales survey of 2,000 UK adults found 31 percent believe quantum computing is science fiction, despite organizations worldwide already actively preparing for its cybersecurity implications, and 20 percent believe quantum computing and AI are simply the same technology. The research found roughly half of respondents unaware of quantum computing's actual implications for current encryption specifically, 50 percent don't know future quantum computers could challenge today's encryption methods, 48 percent are unaware quantum advances could make current security protections obsolete, and 47 percent don't realize data encrypted today could become exposed once sufficiently powerful quantum computers eventually exist

Despite this widespread misunderstanding of the underlying technology, general concern about data security remains genuinely high, with nearly two-thirds of respondents saying they worry about data security broadly.
