This Insider Monkey piece on Yahoo Finance takes a slightly different angle from the decoder coverage and frames the week around Jensen Huang. Back in January 2025, the Nvidia CEO said very useful quantum computers could be up to 30 years away. Quantum stocks took a beating, and IonQ shares fell about 40 percent in what the article calls their worst single-day drop

Fast forward to now and IonQ says its Superion 256 will be the first on-premises quantum processor installed at Nvidia's Accelerated Quantum Research Center, with deployment planned for 2027. Nvidia will put the quantum unit alongside conventional accelerated hardware in a setting built for developing large hybrid systems. The research targets include financial optimisation, materials science and computational chemistry. Superion 256 was introduced on September 8, orders are open, and first customer deliveries are also expected in 2027

The piece also covers the decoder result from September 22. IonQ showed a real-time decoder running continuously on one conventional CPU, tested on benchmark circuits simulating up to 408 logical qubits and over 31.5 million operations with as little as 0.02 percent extra execution time. The author is careful to say this was not a physical machine with 408 logical qubits. It was a test of whether ordinary processors could keep up with error correction at that simulated scale, which ties neatly into the hybrid model Nvidia is pursuing

To its credit, the article lists what IonQ still has to prove. The financial value of the Nvidia deployment hasn't been disclosed, and Nvidia works with several quantum companies. IonQ's 2026 revenue guidance of $450 million to $460 million includes SkyWater revenue from July 31 onward, so not all of the growth is organic quantum sales. On the flip side, hedge fund holders rose to 42 in Q2 and short interest dipped slightly

It is fair to say Huang's comment has not aged perfectly, but it hasn't been disproven either. Commercially useful fault-tolerant machines still don't exist. What has changed is that Nvidia is clearly hedging by building the classical infrastructure that any future quantum system will lean on

For our purposes, hybrid quantum-classical setups are probably how a first cryptographically relevant machine would actually run. GPU clusters handling decoding and control next to a quantum processor isn't science fiction anymore. That makes deals like this worth watching even for people who couldn't care less about the share price
