IonQ has released a video called The Prove It Stage: What DARPA's Stage C Means for IonQ, explaining why its progress in a major US government programme matters. The video follows the company's announcement earlier this month that it had advanced to Stage C of DARPA's Quantum Benchmarking Initiative

The Quantum Benchmarking Initiative is designed to answer a simple but very hard question: can a quantum computer reach utility scale, where the value of its computations is greater than its cost? Stage C is the final and most demanding phase, where DARPA independently tests a company's hardware and software against the roadmap it has promised

According to IonQ's announcement, its Stage C agreement is worth up to $300 million, although funding beyond the initial amount depends on future appropriations. The stage runs through 2029 and will cover several generations of IonQ's Superion systems, starting with its sixth generation Superion 256. Other reports name Atom Computing, Diraq and IBM among the companies also moving into the final stage

In the earlier stages, IonQ first set out a technical concept for a utility scale quantum computer, then produced a detailed research and development roadmap covering requirements, designs and plans to reduce risk. Chief executive Niccolo de Masi called reaching Stage C a significant vote of confidence, saying it requires building systems that can be manufactured reliably and at scale. Chris Ballance, IonQ's president of quantum computing, said radical simplification and rapid scale are at the heart of how the company builds

The prove it label fits well, because this is the stage where claims meet independent testing. Being judged by DARPA rather than by its own marketing is a serious test for any quantum company. The video is IonQ's own explainer, so it naturally presents the news positively, but the programme itself is one of the most credible benchmarks in the field

How much weight should we give to DARPA's verdict on quantum roadmaps? And which of the Stage C companies do you think is most likely to reach utility scale first?
