My own honest guess is that for most regular people almost nothing changes immediately and visibly, banks, governments and major tech companies have been actively preparing post quantum cryptography migrations for years specifically anticipating this exact moment, so the actual transition would likely be a quiet background upgrade most users never consciously notice happening at all

Where it would genuinely matter a lot is anything relying on encryption that was supposed to stay secure for decades, harvest now decrypt later is already a real documented concern, meaning encrypted data intercepted and stored today specifically for later decryption once quantum capability arrives could suddenly become readable, which matters enormously for classified government communications or long term trade secrets even if it means very little for your average online shopping session from years ago

The genuinely scary scenario isn't really day one of a working quantum computer existing at all, it's more the gap period where a capable quantum computer exists somewhere but the broader world hasn't finished migrating everything over to quantum resistant encryption yet, that transition window is where real damage could actually happen rather than the breakthrough moment itself

Curious whether people think this ends up being a dramatic single day event when it eventually happens, or whether it's actually already quietly happening in slow motion right now through exactly the kind of gradual encryption migrations that groups like NIST have been pushing for years specifically to get ahead of this before it becomes an urgent crisis
