Google continues insisting that commercially useful quantum computing applications are much closer than many industry leaders believe. Executives claim real world breakthroughs in chemistry, materials science and energy research could arrive within five years.

Not everyone agrees with the timeline. Nvidia previously suggested practical quantum systems may still be decades away. Either way, the competition between AI companies and quantum researchers is becoming one of the biggest technology races on the planet.
