Diraq and Equinix announced plans to deploy a Diraq silicon spin quantum computer inside an Equinix data center in Sydney, Australia, in what the companies describe as the world's first silicon spin quantum computer to operate inside a shared commercial data center. The eight qubit system, with all cryogenic cooling and control electronics self contained, will fit alongside standard servers while drawing less than 20 kilowatts of power, and scaling to more qubits requires only a chip replacement rather than any changes to the surrounding infrastructure

Diraq manufactures its qubits using semiconductor fabrication techniques similar to those used for conventional computer chips, which the company says lets it pack far more qubits into less physical space than competing quantum technologies. Diraq founder and CEO Andrew Dzurak said quantum computers are about to become as essential to data centers as servers, CPUs and GPUs already are, framing the data center specifically as where quantum computing goes mainstream

The collaboration will test how the quantum system performs with open network connectivity, remote monitoring and secure integration alongside the classical CPUs and GPUs already running in the facility, while also exploring how quantum and AI systems might eventually work together as both technologies continue scaling up. Once testing wraps up, Diraq plans to give industry partners and customers a chance to see the system in action at the Equinix facility.
