A financial comparison of two prominent moonshot stocks lays out starkly different pictures between D-Wave Quantum, which develops quantum computing systems and cloud services, and QuantumScape, which is developing solid state lithium metal batteries for electric vehicles. D-Wave reported $24.6 million in revenue for fiscal year 2025, up 178.5 percent year over year, with paying customers including Mastercard, Pfizer and Siemens Healthineers, while QuantumScape remains entirely pre-revenue despite partnerships with Volkswagen and Honda.

Both companies remain deeply unprofitable, with D-Wave posting a net loss of $355.1 million against that $24.6 million in revenue, a net margin of negative 1,444 percent, and free cash flow of negative $75.8 million, while QuantumScape posted a larger net loss of $435.1 million on zero revenue, with free cash flow of negative $278.8 million. D-Wave's price to sales ratio sits at an extremely elevated 516.1 times, reflecting a valuation built almost entirely on future expectations rather than current financial performance.

The more meaningful difference between the two lies in balance sheet runway, with QuantumScape holding a current ratio of 15.9 times against D-Wave's 42.4 times, though QuantumScape's considerably larger absolute cash reserves give it more time to reach commercial viability before needing to raise additional capital. The analysis ultimately favours QuantumScape specifically on the grounds of its longer financial runway, while still characterising both companies as genuine moonshot stocks carrying substantial risk regardless of which one an investor might prefer.
