Private messages can feel temporary, but many forums keep them in databases for years. If those messages include passwords, personal details, business information, or old arguments people thought were forgotten, they can become a long-term privacy problem. The quantum angle is not that PMs magically break, but that old encrypted databases and backups may become more attractive targets as future decryption improves.

This is a strong forum topic because private messages are exactly the sort of thing users forget a site is still storing.

I think forum admins should be honest about retention. Keeping everything forever is convenient, but not always fair to users

Old database backups worry me more than live PMs because nobody checks what is sitting in some forgotten archive

This would be a good place to discuss whether forums should offer automatic message pruning or better export tools
