China's government announced increased quantum computing investment. Specific numbers are unclear but commitment is real. China doesn't publish detailed progress the way US companies do. This creates uncertainty about actual capability. Are they ahead? At parity? Behind? Nobody outside China knows for sure. The strategic concern is real though. China making quantum a priority guarantees they'll have capability eventually. The question is whether they achieve it before others or after. Transparency differences make assessment nearly impossible. US and allies should assume China is ahead and prepare accordingly even if that's not true.

China's secrecy around quantum progress is strategic. Let the West guess. Maybe they're ahead maybe not but the uncertainty is valuable
