You don't need a physics PhD to get ahead of this curve. First, learn to read a hardware spec sheet properly, understanding the real difference between qubit count, coherence time and gate fidelity, since raw qubit numbers alone say almost nothing about whether a system can actually solve a useful problem. Second, get comfortable with at least one quantum programming framework, Qiskit and Cirq both have genuinely approachable starting tutorials that run on free cloud access to real hardware

Third, understand the difference between quantum annealing, gate-based and neutral atom approaches well enough to know which kinds of problems each is actually suited for, since pitching the wrong architecture at the wrong problem wastes real time and money. Fourth, learn the basics of post-quantum cryptography and why migration timelines matter now rather than once a cryptographically relevant quantum computer actually exists, since the harvest now decrypt later threat model means today's encrypted data is already exposed to a future risk

Fifth, and possibly most valuable for anyone outside a pure research role, learn to translate a real business or scientific problem into something a quantum computing team can actually evaluate, that translation skill is currently in genuinely short supply industry wide. Curious whether people think hands on coding matters more right now than this kind of translation and problem framing skill

The translation skill point is honestly underrated, most quantum teams I've seen have plenty of physicists and very few people who can actually explain a real business problem clearly enough to evaluate
