Xanadu says new dense encoding halves the cost of quantum memory again

[LossCurve65]

Xanadu says it has found a way to cut the cost of an important quantum building block again. Quantum Zeitgeist reports on a new technique the company calls dense encoding, which halves the cost of quantum read only memory, known as QROM

QROM is used to load classical data into quantum algorithms, which many applications need. The new method stores two classical bits on each borrowed qubit, using both the qubit's value and its phase

Combined with Xanadu's earlier sequential bit packets method from May 2026, the company claims a fourfold cut in the number of Toffoli gates needed for data loading compared with older approaches. Xanadu says QROM performance had barely improved for nearly seven years before this work

The research is on arXiv and has not been peer reviewed yet. The source is a Xanadu blog post titled Halving the Cost of QROM Again, so these are company claims for now

Reducing the cost of data loading matters because it can be a hidden bottleneck in quantum algorithms. It ties in nicely with the Claude circuit design work and other efforts to make fault tolerant algorithms cheaper. Every saving brings useful quantum computing closer

How important is data loading for practical quantum algorithms? And will resource savings like this bring useful applications sooner?
