The Madrid region is getting its first quantum computer. The Quantum Insider reports that Telefónica and IQM will install a five qubit IQM Spark at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid before the end of 2026

Universities, hospitals, research centres and startups will all be able to use it. The price has not been disclosed. It is the third system the two companies have placed in Spain, after a 54 qubit Radiance and a five qubit Spark at the CESGA supercomputing centre in Galicia

Borja Ochoa of Telefónica España and IQM's chief executive Jan Goetz both spoke about building a quantum ecosystem in Spain. The Spark is IQM's small machine, designed for teaching and early research rather than heavy computation

Five qubits will not solve any hard problems, and nobody is pretending otherwise. The value is in giving students and researchers hands on experience with real hardware, rather than only simulators or cloud access

Small on premises machines are becoming common in universities across Europe. IQM has done well selling them, and partnering with a telecom giant gives it reach. Spain is quietly building a solid quantum base between Galicia and Madrid

How useful is a five qubit machine for a university? And is local hardware better than cloud access for training?
