Leipzig company SAXON Q says its room temperature diamond quantum computer has performed close to superconducting machines on a standard benchmark. HPCwire has published the company's release. The results come from a preprint on arXiv, so they have not yet been through peer review

The test was Grover's search over eight items using three qubits. With one marked item, the machine found the right answer 77.3 percent of the time, against a classical best of 37.5 percent. With two marked items, it succeeded 87 percent of the time, against 46.4 percent classically

SAXON Q says the 77.3 percent figure is within about one point of the best published superconducting result of 78 percent. The superconducting machine needed to run roughly 15,000 times colder. The company also claims this is the best three qubit Grover result on any room temperature machine

The experiment used an older SAXON Q system installed at Fraunhofer IWU in Dresden in June 2025, and Fraunhofer researchers co-authored the paper. The machine uses nitrogen vacancy centres in diamond and stores quantum information on nuclear spins. It draws about 600 watts, which is tiny compared with systems that need large cooling plants

Looking ahead, the 128 qubit SXQ128 is on sale now, and deliveries of the 512 qubit SXQ512 are due from the second quarter of 2027. Those are bold targets for a diamond platform. Independent testing will be important, but a room temperature machine that plugs into a normal socket is an appealing idea

Could room temperature machines become the practical choice for smaller quantum workloads? And how much weight do you give to company benchmark claims before peer review?
