Rolls-Royce is testing quantum computers on gas turbine simulations that push supercomputers to their limit

A multi-year bet on quantum helping design jet engines

Quantinuum, Rolls-Royce, quantum error correction specialist Riverlane, and EPCC, the University of Edinburgh's National Supercomputing Centre, have signed a multi-year agreement to explore whether fault tolerant quantum computing can help with complex fluid dynamics simulations used in industrial design, specifically gas turbine design. Quantinuum is providing access to its Helios quantum computer and software environment, Rolls-Royce brings the actual industrial use cases and domain expertise, Riverlane contributes quantum error correction and algorithm design, and EPCC supplies supercomputing and hybrid workflow integration

Why gas turbines specifically need this

Complex fluid dynamics simulations sit at the center of gas turbine design, but they demand enormous computing resources as the models get more detailed, a bottleneck that keeps getting worse rather than better as engineers push for more accurate designs. The partners plan to test key computational building blocks of industrially relevant quantum algorithms directly on Helios, then assess how those building blocks could scale onto Quantinuum's planned future systems, Sol and Apollo

This builds on years of groundwork, not a cold start

Rolls-Royce, Riverlane and EPCC have actually been developing and refining algorithms for hybrid fault tolerant applications for almost five years already, using classical emulators rather than real quantum hardware. Rolls-Royce's Leigh Lapworth framed this new agreement as the natural next phase, moving from emulation to actually testing implementations on real quantum hardware, arguing that application development is inherently a multi-year undertaking and that co-developing the algorithms, hardware and software together now is necessary if the industry wants to actually benefit once fault tolerant machines exist

The bigger target, teraQuOp

The UK's national quantum computing mission is aiming for what it calls teraQuOp systems, machines capable of one trillion error free operations, and this collaboration is explicitly framed as supporting that broader government backed push. Riverlane's Steve Brierley pointed to quantum error correction as the single critical technology that will ultimately unlock large scale fault tolerant quantum computing across industries generally, not just aerospace, while EPCC's Oliver Thomson Brown noted his center has been working toward hybrid HPC and quantum integration since 2023, calling this project a natural fit for the UK's first National Supercomputing Centre

Nearly five years of groundwork on classical emulators before ever touching real quantum hardware shows how patient and deliberate this kind of industrial application development actually has to be

[Delulu67]

Gas turbine fluid dynamics is such a perfect real world test case, it's genuinely computationally brutal on classical systems and has obvious commercial value if quantum can meaningfully help

[QuietObserver34]

TeraQuOp as a national target, one trillion error free operations, is a nicely concrete and measurable goal compared to the vaguer fault tolerance language most quantum roadmaps use

[HiggsField]

Testing building blocks now on Helios specifically to understand how they'd scale to the future Sol and Apollo systems is a smart way to derisk the transition before those machines even exist

[DiogoCardoso]

Riverlane calling error correction the critical technology that unlocks everything else is worth remembering, all the flashy qubit count headlines mean little without this less glamorous piece solved

[Callum28]

A UK national supercomputing center, an aerospace giant, and a quantum hardware company all coordinating on one specific industrial problem is a good model for how this technology actually needs to mature

[Sandworm]

Curious how long before we see actual measurable results from testing on Helios rather than just the framework and partnership announcement stage this is currently at

[Dom0]

Aerospace, supercomputing, and quantum all in one sentence usually means two things: big ambitions and very patient timelines.

Still, at least this is aimed at a real problem instead of "let us optimize your shopping cart"

[ParallelSelf34]

Feels like the most expensive way ever devised to slightly improve airflow in a turbine.

Which, to be fair, could be worth millions in fuel savings, so carry on

[DataStream Luca]

The interesting part is not whether quantum wins, it is whether it helps even a tiny bit.

Shaving a fraction off simulation time or improving accuracy by a few percent could justify the whole effort.

[SpikeDudley05]

That collaboration lineup reads like a "we are covering all bases" checklist.

Hardware, error correction, HPC, industry use case. Nobody wants to be the missing piece if it actually works.

[Craig71]

There is something amusing about throwing cutting-edge quantum tech at what is basically very angry spinning air.

Physics meets more physics, just with extra steps

[EthanHinds]

Best case scenario: quantum helps with specific sub-calculations like optimization loops.

Worst case: nice whitepapers and a few conference slides.

Middle ground is probably where it lands

[Oscar_86]

This is one of those projects where success will look very boring.

"We improved simulation efficiency by 7%." Not flashy, but massively valuable in practice.

[WaveFunction34]

At least they are not pretending quantum will replace supercomputers overnight.

The hybrid angle is doing a lot of heavy lifting here, quietly and sensibly.

[Blake_73]

There is always that phase where every industry tries to map their hardest problem onto quantum.

Aerospace actually makes more sense than most, to be fair.

[NoCap]

If nothing else, this will produce a generation of engineers who understand both CFD and quantum.

That alone might be worth the investment

[Woven Sarah]

Part of me suspects the real breakthroughs will come from unexpected side effects.

Better algorithms, improved error mitigation, things that spin off from the main goal.

[DeepCourier]

If they manage to make jet engines even slightly more efficient, that scales globally.

So while it sounds niche, the impact could be pretty wide.

Quietly one of the more practical quantum experiments out there

[DecisionNode]

The phrase "push supercomputers to their limit" is doing a lot of marketing work here

But yes, these simulations are brutal, so fair enough.

[GoldDriver]

There is also a bit of "future-proofing" going on.

No one wants to be the company that ignored quantum and had to catch up later.

[Daedalus84]

Would love to see a direct comparison: classical vs hybrid vs quantum-assisted on the same problem.

That is when things get interesting instead of theoretical.

[Harry64]

Somewhere in this project, there is an engineer just trying to get a stable result while everyone else talks about qubits.

That person is the real hero
