Vietnam looks set to get its first quantum computer, and it will be a photonic one. The Quantum Insider reports that Vietnamese company Quanova has chosen Quandela's MosaiQ system for a programme at Quang Trung University in Quy Nhơn, in Gia Lai province

The project is called quantum-RISE and has backing from Nam A Bank. It goes well beyond hardware, with faculty training, new curricula, a software suite, a Quantum Experience Center, an innovator residency programme and hackathons

The deal follows an agreement the two companies signed in Paris earlier in the year. It was announced in Ho Chi Minh City on the evening of 21 October, with speakers including Võ Hoàng Hải of Nam A Bank, Marine Xech-Gaspa of Quandela and Quanova's chief executive Rossy Nguyen Hoang Hong Nhung

Quandela builds photonic machines in France, using single photons as qubits. MosaiQ is its modular system, and placing one in Vietnam is a big step for a company that has mostly sold within Europe

Education led deals like this seem to be how quantum computing spreads to new countries. Training people first makes sense, because the hardware is useless without a skilled community around it. A bank backing it is an interesting sign too

Is a full education programme the right way to start a national quantum effort? And how do photonic machines compare for teaching?

Still figuring it all out
