planqc wins a Made in Europe Award for building quantum computers at home

German neutral atom company planqc has won the Made in Europe Award 2026 in the Commercialising category, according to Quantum Zeitgeist. The award recognises its efforts to build a sovereign European quantum computing industry rather than relying on imports. Chief executive and co-founder Dr Alexander Glätzle collected the prize in Berlin. The company was only founded in 2022, as a research spin-off, which makes the speed of its progress all the more striking

planqc's order book gives the award some substance. It is building a 100 qubit neutral atom quantum computer for the German Aerospace Center, DLR, and has recently received the first components for a 1,000 qubit system for the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre in Munich. It also works with Airbus, the European Space Agency, BMW and Fraunhofer on applications. Those are serious customers for a company that is barely four years old

Glätzle's quote sums up the pitch. "Europe doesn't need to import the next era of computing," he said. "We turn fundamental research into quantum computers and put them to use for European industry and science." The company also keeps its supply chain inside Europe, buying lasers, photonics and vacuum technology from specialist European suppliers. That last point may matter as much as the qubits, given how much of the world's advanced hardware supply sits in a handful of countries

Sovereignty has become a recurring theme in European quantum news. France has its own champions in Pasqal, Alice and Bob and Quandela, the UK pledged 2 billion pounds for quantum in March, and Germany is backing companies like planqc and IQM. The idea is that quantum computing could become strategic infrastructure, and nobody wants to be dependent on a single foreign supplier. Whether Europe can fund these companies to the scale needed against American giants is another question

Is a European supply chain for quantum hardware realistic, or will the industry end up global anyway? And are neutral atoms becoming the technology to watch?

Neutral atoms do seem to be having a moment. planqc, Pasqal, QuEra, Atom Computing and Infleqtion are all pushing hard, and even Google has started a neutral atom team this year

Scaling to thousands of atoms looks easier than scaling superconducting chips. The open question is gate speed. Atoms are slower to operate than superconducting circuits, and that matters for long error corrected computations

Founded in 2022 and already shipping components for a 1,000 qubit machine is fast. Most hardware companies take far longer to reach that stage. The spin-off route from a strong research group clearly helps

Good leadership matters too. Spin-offs often struggle when the founders are brilliant physicists but have never run a company

Awards like this are nice for morale, but customers and working machines matter more. On that front, planqc looks to be doing well. Airbus and ESA do not sign up with any startup that happens to knock on the door
