German quantum software company Kipu Quantum has signed a strategic partnership with IT consultancy NTT DATA. Quantum Computing Report says the goal is to bring hardware tailored hybrid quantum algorithms and quantum machine learning into business systems. It is a significant deal given NTT DATA's size

NTT DATA will give staff access to the Kipu Quantum Hub, and roll out Kipu's training courses across its workforce of nearly 200,000 people. That could create a large pool of consultants who understand quantum methods. Skills shortages have been one of the biggest barriers to adoption

The deal builds on a pilot with mining equipment maker Komatsu Peru. Kipu's quantum machine learning was used for predictive maintenance on heavy machinery in real working conditions. Spotting problems before machines break down can save a lot of money in mining

Target areas include production optimisation, supply chain logistics, predictive maintenance and financial risk modelling. Kipu's methods compress circuits to reduce their depth, which helps them run on today's noisy processors and early fault tolerant machines. The rollout starts in Peru and Latin America before extending to NTT DATA's other clients

Partnerships between quantum startups and big consultancies are becoming more common. They give startups a route to customers, and consultancies something new to offer. The real test will be whether clients see measurable benefits over classical methods

Can quantum machine learning beat classical methods for tasks like predictive maintenance? And how important is training for quantum adoption?
