D-Wave has found a major partner in South Korea. The Quantum Insider reports that D-Wave and LG CNS, the IT and AI services company, have signed a memorandum of understanding to bring quantum optimisation to businesses in South Korea and beyond

The deal was announced on stage at D-Wave's Qubits Asia conference in Seoul by D-Wave chief executive Alan Baratz and LG CNS president and chief executive Hyun Shin-Gyoon. It combines D-Wave's quantum annealing systems with LG CNS's experience in optimisation modelling and systems integration

Target sectors include manufacturing, telecoms, finance and retail. Example uses are factory scheduling, delivery routing and resource allocation, and the stated goal is to move from proofs of concept into production. The companies also plan to look for joint commercial opportunities

LG CNS has already researched quantum and optimisation methods for image reconstruction, inspection and detecting anomalies underground. Hyun said the partnership will help accelerate the commercialisation of related services, while Baratz said annealing is already driving positive business outcomes for customers

The memorandum is not binding, and no financial terms, timelines or customers have been named. Even so, a large systems integrator can open doors that a hardware company alone cannot. D-Wave has long argued that annealing is useful today, and partnerships like this are how it tries to prove it

Is quantum annealing delivering real business value yet? And how much do non binding agreements like this mean?
