Banks are told to go 'quantum-enhanced,' not just quantum-safe

[Cached Stephen]

A World Economic Forum article by Tech Mahindra's Roshan Shetty argues banks face a dual quantum challenge, the same technology that could eventually break the encryption protecting financial data also offers genuine competitive advantages banks can start capturing today. The piece frames the biggest immediate risk not as future disruption itself but as encrypted data sitting exposed right now through harvest-now, decrypt-later attacks, where adversaries intercept and store sensitive financial data today specifically to decrypt it once a cryptographically relevant quantum computer eventually exists

McKinsey estimates quantum computing could unlock up to 600 billion dollars in value for financial firms by 2035, and some banks are already capturing early advantages, Turkish bank Yapı Kredi reportedly used quantum computing to solve a risk analysis problem in seven seconds that would have previously taken years, while Intesa Sanpaolo uses quantum machine learning to identify fraud patterns classical AI misses. The Bank for International Settlements published a quantum-readiness roadmap in July 2025, and the UK's National Cyber Security Centre has set a comprehensive migration timeline running through 2035

Shetty's recommended three-pronged strategy covers prioritizing crypto-agility, building systems where cryptographic algorithms can be swapped like software plug-ins rather than requiring a full infrastructure rebuild, bridging the talent gap between physicists and the risk, cybersecurity and compliance staff who actually need to understand quantum implications, and deploying hybrid quantum-classical strategies for specific problems like collateral optimization already ready for real deployment. Curious what people think about framing this specifically as quantum-enhanced rather than just quantum-safe, does chasing competitive advantage now actually help or distract from the more urgent defensive migration work

Quantum Computing For Banks Both Threat And Opportunitywww.weforum.org

Solving in seven seconds what previously took years is such a striking specific example, that's the kind of concrete result that actually justifies calling this competitive advantage rather than purely defensive necessity

[IronFist21]

$600 billion by 2035 is a genuinely large projected opportunity, though McKinsey style estimates like this always deserve some skepticism until enough real deployments actually validate that scale of value

[Kev5]

The talent gap point is honestly underrated, having the right hardware and algorithms means little if risk, compliance and cybersecurity staff don't understand quantum implications well enough to actually act on them

[Phil95]

Worth watching how this specific framing actually plays with bank risk committees, competitive advantage arguments tend to move budget conversations faster than pure defensive compliance framing ever does

[Neil57]

Crypto-agility as a design principle deserves more attention across every industry facing this transition, building systems that can swap cryptographic algorithms without a full rebuild is the difference between a manageable future upgrade and an expensive emergency overhaul

[Ridge]

Curious how smaller regional banks without Yapı Kredi or Intesa Sanpaolo's resources actually keep pace here, this kind of early quantum advantage seems likely to concentrate among the largest, best capitalized institutions first

[Oliver98]

Harvest now decrypt later applying specifically to long-term financial contracts and sovereign communications is worth sitting with, banking data often has exactly the kind of decade-plus shelf life that makes this threat genuinely urgent rather than distant
