Why do you think? why they work and why are they so addictive in this board?

Post games are the forum equivalent of the party game, low-stakes, repeating, accessible to anyone and designed to generate participation rather than produce a specific output. Understanding why they work helps forum administrators design better ones and helps members understand why they keep coming back to threads that seem on the surface to contain no new information.

The core psychology is that post games create a low-friction way to participate without requiring either expertise or a considered opinion. Most forum threads implicitly require you to know something about the subject or have a view worth sharing. A word association thread, a two truths and a lie game, or a chain thread requires nothing except willingness to play. This lowers the barrier to participation for lurkers and casual members who do not feel qualified to join specialist discussions.

The social bonding function is the second mechanism. Playful interaction creates familiarity and goodwill between members who might only interact seriously in longer topic threads. Someone who has played word association with you for three months is a known friendly presence in ways that make the forum feel like a community rather than a venue. Forum research consistently shows that members who participate in off-topic and social threads have higher retention rates and higher participation in on-topic threads over time.

The best post games have simple rules that can be understood immediately, a structure that creates a natural next action for whoever reads the last reply, a low time cost per participation, and some element of social display, either humour, creativity or knowledge, that gives participants something to be proud of. The word chain, the prediction game, the trivia thread, and the photo challenge all share these properties even though they look very different on the surface.

Word chains work because they create an obvious next action. You read the last word and you contribute the next one. There is no decision about whether to participate, just the decision about which word to choose
Football is life. Everything else is just details.
