BigDog26

The classic collaborative forum game. Each reply adds exactly ONE sentence continuing the story from wherever the last poster left it, no more, no less, and the fun is entirely in nobody having any real control over where this ends up

House rules to keep it functioning properly, one sentence per post, reply to the most recent addition so the story does not fork into chaos, keep it clean enough for the front page, and resist the urge to write a compound sentence stuffed with commas to sneak in extra plot, the spirit of the rule matters more than the letter of it

The genuine pleasure of these threads is watching a story lurch unpredictably between genres as different posters take it in wildly different directions than whoever came before intended, a cosy morning scene can become a heist can become a ghost story within five sentences and that whiplash is the entire point

Starting sentence to kick us off. The kettle had just finished boiling when Margaret noticed the back door was open again
It's not a bug, it's a feature

Ann

She was certain she had locked it the night before, the same as every night for the last thirty years

Just here for the craic :)

Brittle Coder

Margaret grabbed the nearest weapon to hand, which happened to be a rather ineffective wooden spoon

WaveFunction74

Outside, something large and clearly unbothered by rose bushes was humming what sounded suspiciously like a show tune

Cass93

She recognised the tune immediately as the one her late husband used to whistle while gardening
Normal is overrated

Scarlet Annie

Frozen at the doorway, Margaret whispered his name into the morning air, half hoping and half terrified of an answer

Abbie21

A badger emerged from behind the hydrangeas wearing, for reasons nobody present could explain, a small tweed cap

StarforgeSocket

Margaret sat down heavily on the garden step, deciding this was either a sign or she had finally lost her mind entirely

ThoughtVector

The badger tipped its cap politely, finished the show tune, and wandered off toward next door's prize vegetable patch

Violet_47

Margaret went back inside, poured her tea, and decided some mornings simply did not require an explanation
COYB — you know who you are

Electric Brad

She never did tell anyone about the badger, though she started leaving out a small saucer of milk every evening from then on
