Let's get the poetry board flowing with a simple challenge. Write a four line poem about your daily commute. It could be the train, the bus, the car, a bike ride, a walk or even the short trip from your bed to your home office. Commutes are full of small dramas, odd characters and moments of unexpected beauty, which makes them perfect material for poetry

Rhyming or free verse, funny or thoughtful, it is all welcome. You might write about delayed trains, rain on the windscreen, the same strangers you see every morning or the sky as the sun comes up. Four lines is short enough that anyone can have a go, even if you have never written a poem before. Nobody is judging spelling or technique here

I will start with mine. The seven forty, late again, its windows steamed with sighs. A man in a suit reads yesterday's news, a child counts passing skies. My coffee cools, my phone goes dark, the tunnel swallows light. And somewhere near the second stop, the day decides it's right

Please only post your own original writing. Feel free to comment kindly on other people's poems too, as encouragement goes a long way for new writers

What does your commute look like in four lines?
