Sometimes it is a famous, widely anthologised piece that somehow still manages to feel like it was written specifically for the person reading it, and other times it is a genuinely obscure poem that barely anyone else seems to have encountered, which can make the personal connection feel even stronger precisely because it feels so rarely shared.

What makes a single poem stick with someone for years or even decades, long after countless other pieces of writing have been forgotten entirely, is one of the more fascinating mysteries of the entire art form, and it rarely seems to have much to do with a poem's technical reputation or critical standing. Mary Oliver's Wild Geese completely reframed how I think about self worth and belonging whenever I first came across it. That line about not needing to be good, about only needing to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves, still gets me every single time I reread it.
