A workshop thread with a narrow and useful job. Bring ONE line that is not working, the line you have rewritten fifteen times, the line that says almost but not quite the thing, post it with a sentence of context about what it needs to do in the poem, and the board operates

The surgery rules, suggestions must engage with the poet's intention rather than replacing it with your own poem, offer the diagnosis before the cure, sometimes the line is fine and its NEIGHBOUR is the problem which is a legal finding here, and the poet owns all decisions, we advise, they cut

A note on why this narrow format works when general critique threads sprawl, one line is small enough for strangers to hold entirely in their heads, the discussion stays concrete, and watching six people argue about a single comma teaches more craft than a page of general feedback, previous surgeries have run forty replies over one preposition and everyone left better

Anaesthetic provided in the form of the house guarantee, every poet here has a folder of lines that never behaved, bringing yours to the table is the opposite of weakness, the operating theatre is open

Lazy Sentinel

Bringing the first patient, the line is meant to end a poem about my father's hands and currently reads, his hands knew the names of every tool, context, it needs to land the whole poem and instead it lands a fact, operate freely

Gareth19

Diagnosis before cure per the rules, the line is doing inventory when it should be doing intimacy, the word names is your problem and your solution, what if the tools knew HIS name, the reversal moves the knowing into the objects and the grief arrives on its own

BlackMamba35

The reversal suggestion just performed surgery in one reply and I am here taking notes on somebody else's operation

VoidSentinel

Second opinion for the first patient, the neighbour rule may apply, the line as written might be fine if the line BEFORE it earns the plainness, sometimes a fact lands like a bell when the previous line does the feeling, post the neighbour
Somewhere between inspired and overwhelmed

R948

Poet of patient one reporting, tried the reversal aloud and had to sit down for a minute, the tools knew his name is the poem, four years of drafts and a forum fixed it before lunch, decisions made, cutting now, thank you
First post, best pin

Patient two admitted, the line is, the sea kept doing what the sea does, context, meant to convey indifference of nature after a loss, currently conveys that I could not think of anything the sea does

Always_Craig96

Diagnosis for the sea, the repetition is actually the right instinct, indifference through tautology, the problem is KEPT which editorialises, the sea does what the sea does is colder and the coldness is the point, one word removed, indifference achieved
git commit -m "fixed everything"

WarMachine62

Counter diagnosis, the tautology is the strength but the line arrives too early in your description, indifference lands hardest as an ENDING, if this is mid poem the line is homeless rather than broken, placement surgery not word surgery

Luca76

The homeless line finding deserves to enter the permanent glossary, half my stuck lines are good lines standing in the wrong doorway
Opinions are my own. Obviously.

Patient three, brave enough after watching two successful operations, the line is, and the kettle went on being a kettle, context, same species as the sea line apparently and now I am worried we have all been writing the same poem
Always open to a good discussion

DeepInlet

We have all been writing the same poem forever, that is the entire history of the form, the kettle line is admitted for surgery and preliminary diagnosis suggests it is healthier than its owner believes, the objects of this forum are achieving sentience one workshop at a time
