Something about a place I used to know

This came out in one go, which is unusual for me.

The house is different now.
Someone else has painted it.
The tree we used to climb is gone.
The gate does not fit

in the way I remember gates fitting.
But the step is still there, slightly tilted.
I stood on it and felt the old lean.
Something in me tilted.

Still tweaking it but this is the current version

Okay that makes more sense than what I had in my head. I have been down a rabbit hole on this and still feel like I am missing the full picture.

There is something really effective about the detail in this. The painted house and missing tree say more than a long explanation ever could. Places are strange like that, they stay the same in your memory while the real world quietly edits them.

The bit about the gate especially works for me. Small things become landmarks when they are tied to a person or a moment. A random gate to someone else can be an entire chapter of your life
