There is a famous six word story, often wrongly credited to Ernest Hemingway, about baby shoes that were never worn. Whoever wrote it, it shows how much a handful of words can carry. I thought it would be fun to try the same thing with poetry. Six words, no more and no less

The poem can be about anything. Love, loss, the weather, your commute, a cup of tea or the end of the universe are all fair game. Rhyme is optional, and so is punctuation. The challenge is choosing words that do a lot of work, since every single one has to earn its place

Here is my attempt to get things started. Kettle boils. House silent. Missing you. It is about the first morning after a family member moved out, and those six words say it better than a long poem might. Keeping it short somehow made it harder to write, not easier

Feel free to post several attempts, and to explain them if you want to, although many work best without explanation. Responses to other people's poems are welcome too, as long as they are kind. Sometimes a reply in six words is the best response
