Poetry splits people more than almost any other kind of writing. Some readers love a poem that hands them its meaning clearly and lands with a punch. Others find that a bit flat and prefer something they can turn over for days, finding new readings each time. Both camps tend to think the other is missing the point

Clear poems have a lot going for them. They are accessible, they work when read aloud and they do not make anyone feel stupid for not getting it. Plenty of much loved poems are very direct. Then again, a poem that explains everything can feel more like prose with line breaks

Open poems reward patience and rereading. The risk is that ambiguity becomes an excuse for vagueness, and readers give up before the poem gives anything back. School put a lot of people off poetry for exactly that reason

Which do you prefer when you read for pleasure? Feel free to mention a favourite poem that sums up your choice, as long as you only quote a line or two
