Poetry Challenge: Write a Poem That Contains Exactly One Lie

Here's a poetry challenge worth trying. The constraint is precise.

Write a poem of any length in any form. The poem must contain exactly one lie. Everything else in the poem must be true or feel true. The lie can be anywhere. The reader should not be told which line is the lie.

The constraint is interesting because it forces honesty everywhere else. And because one deliberate untruth in an otherwise true poem creates a particular kind of tension. The reader searches for it. The search changes how they read everything.

The interesting thing about this constraint is that the lie reveals itself by being the line that feels most carefully written. Effort signals untruth when everything else is observed directly

This is an excellent prompt because it's both a writing exercise and a self-examination. You cannot write the lie without deciding what truth it replaces

The form you choose matters. In a strictly metered poem the lie has to conform to the rhythm which makes it harder to hide. In free verse it can drift at its own pace

Posted five attempts before I found one where the lie felt genuinely embedded rather than obvious. The poem that came out is better than anything I'd write without the constraint
