I grew up thinking poetry had to rhyme but a lot of modern poetry does not. Does rhyme actually matter anymore?

Rhyme is just one tool not a requirement. Free verse is very common now.

Some poems are stronger without rhyme because it keeps them more natural.

If rhyme feels forced it usually weakens the poem rather than improves it.

Focus more on rhythm and meaning than strict rhyme schemes.
