Researchers at UC San Francisco published findings on May 22 warning that current recommended daily intake guidelines for Vitamin B12 may be insufficient to protect the aging brain. Older adults with blood B12 levels classified as normal under existing guidelines were found to have meaningfully higher rates of cognitive decline than those with higher levels.

The finding suggests the threshold for adequate B12 has been set using markers that do not capture brain-specific needs. The researchers argue the guidelines need revision to reflect neurological protection specifically rather than just the biochemical markers currently used to define sufficiency.

The mechanism is clear. B12 is essential for myelin sheath maintenance and for preventing homocysteine accumulation which damages blood vessels. Brain-specific protection requires higher levels than deficiency prevention

Getting B12 tested is cheap and straightforward. Anyone over 60 should know their level and the useful information from this research is that aiming for the higher end of normal is probably wise
