Uber launches the UK's first robotaxis, with a safety driver still on board

Uber launched the UK's first robotaxi service in London on September 3rd, deploying 15 autonomous Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles equipped with self driving technology from British company Wayve. Each vehicle still requires a Transport for London licensed safety driver on board who can take control if needed, since fully driverless operation would require additional regulatory approval Uber hasn't yet received. Rides are matched through the existing UberX, Uber Electric and Uber Comfort options, with the self driving option only appearing once a journey is booked and an autonomous vehicle happens to be available nearby

Uber said it surveyed London based customers through the app and found more than 100,000 said they'd choose a self driving taxi if available, despite well publicized incidents of driverless rides malfunctioning in US cities where similar services already operate. Wayve's technology uses AI to analyze real time data from roof mounted sensors rather than relying on pre-programmed routes, letting the vehicle make decisions on the spot based on actual road conditions. A BBC journalist who became the first British reporter to ride in the service reported the trip was largely smooth, though the safety driver did intervene once during the journey

Uber's global head of autonomous mobility, Sarfraz Maredia, said the company plans to phase in autonomous vehicles gradually over several years, with human drivers expected to remain a significant part of Uber's London operations for a long time regardless. Google's Waymo and Chinese firm Baidu are also both reportedly pursuing UK robotaxi launches, setting up genuine competition in the market.
