Spotify to add AI persona badges and a spam filter to flag AI-generated artists

Spotify has announced it will introduce AI persona badges to clearly flag artists on the platform who are entirely AI generated, alongside a separate spam filter specifically designed to catch AI generated tracks trying to game the system through mass uploads and fake engagement

The badge will appear directly on an artist's profile page, marking accounts where the vocals, likeness or persona itself is fully AI generated, distinguishing that category from human artists who might use AI tools as part of their production process without the artist itself being an artificial persona, Spotify said the goal is giving listeners genuine clarity about who or what they're actually listening to, rather than leaving them to guess based on suspicious sounding names or oddly generic album art

The spam filter targets a genuinely different but related problem, AI generated tracks being uploaded in bulk specifically to exploit royalty payouts, sometimes paired with bot driven streams designed to simulate real listener engagement, Spotify has previously disclosed removing tens of millions of spammy AI tracks from the platform over the past year alone, and a man in North Carolina pleaded guilty earlier this year to running exactly this kind of scheme, using AI generated songs combined with fake streaming bots to fraudulently collect more than 8 million dollars in royalties before getting caught

This move lands amid genuinely mounting pressure across the entire music industry, the big three major labels, Sony Music, Universal Music Group and Warner, have been pushing streaming platforms and chart compilers to disqualify AI generated slop tracks from official charts entirely, and separately AI music generator Suno recently announced its own watermarking system specifically to let other platforms identify and trace AI generated tracks even after they've been uploaded elsewhere, following a landmark German court ruling that found Suno had infringed copyright by training on collecting society GEMA's represented catalogue without a license

Spotify's approach genuinely differs from a straightforward ban though, the company has been careful to frame this as a transparency and anti fraud measure rather than a rejection of AI generated music outright, artists using AI tools as part of a genuinely human led creative process remain unaffected by the new badge system, the distinction the company is drawing is specifically between AI assisted human music, which stays completely unflagged, and fully AI generated artist personas, which now get clearly labeled for listeners to make their own informed judgment about
