SpaceX wants to rent the Pentagon its spare AI computing power, worth billions

Elon Musk's SpaceX is in talks with the US Department of Defense to supply data center computing capacity worth billions of dollars to power AI models across Pentagon operations, according to the Wall Street Journal, which cited people familiar with the discussions. The talks are ongoing and could still collapse without a deal, and neither SpaceX nor the Pentagon responded to requests for comment

If finalized, the arrangement would put SpaceX in direct competition with Amazon, Microsoft, Google and Oracle, all of which already supply computing capacity to the Pentagon, and would mark a genuine expansion of SpaceX's infrastructure business well beyond rockets and satellites into government cloud computing specifically. SpaceX employees have reportedly discussed plans to compete more broadly with neocloud providers like CoreWeave by offering computing capacity to AI customers at lower prices than the established hyperscalers charge

This isn't SpaceX's first move of this kind. In June the company signed a multi-year cloud services agreement with Google providing access to roughly 110,000 Nvidia chips, and in May Anthropic struck a deal to use the full computing power of SpaceX's Colossus 1 facility in Memphis, gaining 300 megawatts of new capacity in the process. A potential Pentagon deal would slot into what could become a key piece of the Trump administration's Golden Dome missile defense proposal, which aims to build a persistent global capability to sense and track airborne threats from space

The broader pattern here is becoming familiar across the whole AI industry, the Defense Department is moving aggressively to secure additional cloud computing capacity to support intelligence agencies and military AI applications, following Amazon's own announcement last year that it would invest up to 50 billion dollars expanding AI and supercomputing capacity specifically for US government customers. Whichever companies end up supplying the Pentagon's AI infrastructure are positioning themselves at the center of one of the largest and most consequential government technology buildouts happening anywhere in the world right now
