SpaceX unveils plans for a $100 billion Starship launch complex in coastal Louisiana

SpaceX announced plans this week to build its largest rocket launch complex yet on a 125,000 acre site in southern Louisiana, a 100 billion dollar effort the company is calling Starbase Louisiana. The site sits on Pecan Island in Vermilion Parish, roughly 200 miles west of New Orleans, on marshland more than eight times the size of Manhattan that was formerly owned by Exxon Mobil before a decade long legal battle over coastal wetland damage cleared the way for SpaceX's plans.

SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell detailed the facility at an event alongside Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, describing a self sustaining spaceport that will include its own methane production for rocket propellant, dedicated power generation, deep water shipping capabilities to move Starship hardware in from Texas, vehicle processing facilities, and potentially its own airport. Construction is set to begin in 2027, with the first Starship launch from the site targeted for 2029, expanding SpaceX's Starship operations beyond its existing South Texas base and a planned Florida site.

The scale of the eventual buildout is clearly enormous. At full capacity the complex is expected to host five separate launch centers capable of supporting thousands of Starship flights per year, and Elon Musk suggested on social media the site could eventually feature more than a dozen launch towers handling up to 30 flights daily. SpaceX said it selected the Louisiana location after roughly a seven year search for a site offering both the sheer land area and the fuel access needed to support that kind of sustained, high cadence rocket operation.

State officials framed the project as a major economic win, with Louisiana projecting the complex will create 3,000 direct jobs paying an average salary of roughly 92,600 dollars, close to triple the regional median, alongside an estimated 8,100 additional indirect jobs across the surrounding area. Shotwell said very large portions of the total site will remain untouched natural wetlands rather than getting developed outright, and the project explicitly connects to SpaceX's broader AI satellite launch ambitions, adding a fourth major US launch site to a company that's rapidly built out infrastructure spanning rocket launches, AI data centers, and chip manufacturing across the American South in recent years
