Carbon capture and storage, often shortened to CCS, is a group of technologies designed to trap carbon dioxide before it enters the atmosphere, either directly at an industrial source like a power plant or steel factory, or in some newer approaches, pulled straight out of the ambient air. Once captured, the CO2 gets compressed into a dense, fluid like state, transported by pipeline or ship, and injected deep underground into porous rock formations specifically chosen because they can trap the gas permanently, sealed beneath an impermeable layer of rock above them

The uncomfortable complication is that roughly 80% of the CO2 captured worldwide each year does not actually go toward pure climate mitigation at all, it gets used for something called enhanced oil recovery, where captured carbon dioxide is injected into partially depleted oil fields specifically to help extract more oil that would otherwise be too difficult to reach. The CO2 usually stays underground afterward, which does still count as storage, but the practice sits in an awkward position, a climate technology that in its most common real world use case also directly extends fossil fuel production

Beyond that tension, the technology's actual climate impact remains genuinely debated among researchers and policy analysts. Despite growing government incentives like the US 45Q tax credit and the EU's Net Zero Industry Act, deployment of CCS at real scale continues to run well below what climate models suggest is actually needed, held back by stubbornly high costs, regulatory hurdles, and inconsistent policy support, which is why serious climate researchers tend to describe it as one useful tool among several rather than a complete solution on its own
