Singapore based researchers from A*STAR and the National University of Singapore reported a hybrid quantum classical method for molecular docking, the process of predicting how a potential drug candidate binds to a target protein, tested on an IBM quantum processor. The method compressed an 18 variable docking problem down to just six qubits and a 14 variable problem down to five qubits, with the quantum hardware identifying the same molecular contacts as conventional classical calculations in both tests, though the small scale demonstrations didn't show quantum advantage over classical methods yet

Molecular docking is widely used in early drug research to study whether a molecule is likely to bind to a disease associated protein, letting scientists compare large numbers of potential drug candidates before moving to far more expensive laboratory testing. The process becomes exponentially harder as molecules grow larger and more flexible, since each possible bend, rotation and approach angle toward the protein creates another potential binding arrangement, quickly producing more combinations than can realistically be tested one by one using classical methods alone

The method is designed specifically to assist existing drug discovery software rather than replace it outright, focusing on the genuinely hardest part of the docking calculation using a resource efficient encoding technique. The work was tested on IBM's 156 qubit Heron r2 processor.
