Finnish game studio MiTale showcased its post apocalyptic RPG C.L.A.Y. - The Last Redemption at Gamescom, claiming it's the first commercial game on the market to actually use quantum computing techniques in creating game assets, narrative structures and procedural systems. The studio worked closely with experts from IBM Quantum Computing and says this represents the first step toward using real quantum hardware in games similarly to how a GPU accelerates specific complex tasks today

MiTale founder and CEO Natasha Skult said the goal wasn't treating quantum computing purely as a technical showcase, but exploring what happens when you actually give this completely different kind of computing technology to game designers and storytellers specifically. The collaboration traces back to 2019, when Skult began experimenting with former IBM Research quantum scientist James Wootton on how quantum principles could apply to game worlds, characters and gameplay systems, eventually integrating IBM's Qiskit software with the Unity game engine

C.L.A.Y.'s development has spanned at least six years so far, with quantum circuit simulations specifically influencing story dynamics and contributing to environment generation and select visual effects.
