Novo Nordisk Foundation backs a new quantum chip factory in Copenhagen

Quantum Foundry Copenhagen and the Novo Nordisk Foundation announced plans for a new 5,300 square meter quantum chip fabrication facility in Copenhagen, aimed at strengthening Europe's ability to design, manufacture and scale next-generation quantum chips at commercial scale. The facility will combine laboratory space for nanofabrication of quantum materials, advanced characterisation, testing, chip assembly and packaging with ultra-high vacuum manufacturing capabilities, offering wafer fabrication services to quantum technology vendors globally on commercial terms once it opens in 2027

European Commission Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen said Europe's quantum ambitions depend on turning scientific excellence into industrial capability, framing the foundry as part of the broader European Chips Act and Quantum Europe Strategy. Quantum Foundry Copenhagen CEO Peter Krogstrup said the company's vision is to become a world-leading quantum chip manufacturer supplying Europe with advanced next-generation quantum computing processors, helping other quantum companies actually scale production rather than staying stuck at lab bench scale

The foundry builds on the Novo Nordisk Foundation's broader commitment of more than 2.9 billion Danish kroner, roughly 390 million euros, to quantum technology, including the Novo Nordisk Foundation Quantum Computing Programme at the Niels Bohr Institute, which aims to build Denmark's first fully functional fault-tolerant quantum computer before 2034. Chief Scientific Officer Lene Oddershede warned that quantum technology risks repeating a familiar pattern where Europe leads on fundamental science but industrial scale-up and global champions emerge elsewhere, positioning this facility as a direct attempt to avoid that outcome.
