NIST announced a new Quantum Manufacturing Engineering Center this week, to be established by SRI with an initial 20 million dollar investment. The focus is the deeply unglamorous layer of the stack, cryostats, lasers, quantum chips, integrated photonics, standards, quality control and building a domestic supply chain for the components everything else depends on

This flows directly from the June 22 executive order on quantum, and SRI is a logical pick since it already manages the NIST funded QED-C consortium that coordinates the US quantum industry. The stated early goal is making quantum enabling components manufacturable at scale within three years

I think this is the most important quantum story of the week and it will get the least attention. Every roadmap to a million qubits quietly assumes someone can produce dilution refrigerators, control wiring and precision lasers at volumes and prices that simply do not exist today, and most of the current supply chain for those parts runs through a handful of specialist firms abroad

The 20 million is seed money rather than a moonshot, clearly meant to pull in industry cost share. Is a milestone driven public private centre the right mechanism here, or does component manufacturing just need boring old procurement contracts at scale?
