John Ternus officially took over as Apple's chief executive on September 1st, ending Tim Cook's 15 year tenure leading the company. Ternus, who had served as Apple's senior vice president of hardware engineering since 2021 and worked at the company since 2001, becomes Apple's eighth CEO. Cook moves into the role of executive chairman, a transition Apple first announced back in April, while continuing to help with certain aspects of the company including engaging with policymakers around the world

Cook's tenure saw Apple's market value grow from roughly 350 billion dollars when he took over from Steve Jobs in 2011 to about 4.6 trillion dollars today, driven substantially by the iPhone's enormous continued popularity. Apple shares rose roughly 2 percent in midday trading as Ternus formally took over the role. Ternus now faces the challenge of keeping Apple competitive in the AI race while navigating supply chain questions and relationships with political figures including President Trump, who offered public praise for Cook on the day of the transition

Some analysts have framed Ternus's appointment as Apple doubling down on hardware innovation as a core strategy, intertwining AI directly with hardware design rather than treating AI as a separate standalone product line the way some competitors have. Curious what people think Ternus's background in hardware engineering specifically means for Apple's approach to AI compared to a CEO who came up through software or services instead

Question everything. Especially this.

A hardware engineer taking over rather than someone from software or services is a genuinely interesting signal about where Apple thinks its actual competitive advantage in AI needs to come from, tightly integrated silicon and devices rather than pure cloud model capability

Going from 350 billion to 4.6 trillion in market value over one CEO's tenure is a genuinely staggering number to sit with, whatever people think of Cook's specific leadership style, that growth trajectory speaks for itself
