Ireland, a nation of 5.4 million people with a $779 billion GDP, has launched Quantum 2030, a national strategy aimed at making the country an internationally competitive quantum technologies hub by the end of the decade. The vision, first launched in 2023 and now entering implementation, is built around five pillars, supporting fundamental research, developing a talent pipeline, contributing to national and international collaboration, stimulating quantum entrepreneurship, and building broader public awareness of the technology's real world benefits

The country has genuine advantages to build on, an already mature technology ecosystem in Dublin, Cork, Galway and Limerick hosting Google, Microsoft, Meta and Apple, a track record in foundational quantum adjacent fields like photonics and nanofabrication, and a government actively easing visa applications and funding incentives specifically to attract quantum talent. McKinsey estimates the broader quantum technology market could generate up to $2.7 trillion in economic value worldwide by 2035, and Ireland wants a meaningful share of that opportunity

The honest gap is real though, Ireland does not yet host its own operational quantum computer, though IDA Ireland's quantum technologist Dr Meric Kucukbas says delivery of the first of several machines is imminent. The country's homegrown quantum startup scene also remains thin compared to its broader tech sector, since quantum specifically demands hardware, software and physics expertise that a much larger pool of conventional software developers simply doesn't have. Ireland's Equal1, developing a rack mountable quantum computing system, is cited as an early proof point of what's possible locally, but as Kucukbas put it, quantum leadership will not be determined by ambition alone, it will depend on sustained investment, talent development, commercialization and execution actually delivering over the next several years
