Intel announced its 18A-P process node has entered risk production with ambitious efficiency claims. The process combines PowerVia backside power delivery with RibbonFET gate-all-around transistors. Intel claims 9% higher performance at same power level or 18% power reduction at identical performance. These numbers directly compete with TSMC's process roadmap and Intel needs wins to justify the Foundry Services pivot

Risk production is the early manufacturing phase before full-scale output. It's where you discover all the real-world issues that simulations miss. Intel needs this phase to work smoothly because any delays or yield problems would be catastrophic for foundry customers. This is make-or-break for Foundry Services credibility

PowerVia backside power delivery is Intel's architectural advantage over TSMC approaches. Instead of routing power through the front of the chip like everyone else you run it on the back. This reduces congestion and power loss. Combined with gate-all-around transistor design it's a meaningful efficiency improvement. On paper the physics works

The 18% power reduction claim is what skeptics push back on. It's measured against what baseline exactly. Compared to TSMC N3 at equivalent gate delay the number makes sense. But marketing sometimes bakes in advantages that don't scale to real products. We need to see Samsung SMIC Qualcomm and other foundry customers validate through actual tape-out

Intel is racing to prove foundry can be a business beyond just manufacturing its own chips. If 18A works that justifies massive capex on new fabs. If it stumbles Intel's entire strategic pivot falls apart. The risk is enormous which is why this risk production phase matters so much

I read every reply. Even the bad ones.

Risk production is just the beginning. Wait until actual chips tape out and get tested in real products before believing 18A power claims
