IBM Ventures published a perspective piece from its global head of venture capital, Emily Fontaine, laying out where the company is actively investing across the quantum computing stack, and why it believes the industry has moved past the question of whether quantum computing matters into the much narrower question of how quickly it delivers a real advantage over classical computing

IBM's own history in this space runs deep, IBM Fellow and Turing Award winner Charles H. Bennett developed foundational quantum information theory back in 1970, and Nobel laureate Richard Feynman first suggested in 1981 that simulating nature properly would require an actual quantum computer rather than a classical one. IBM put the first quantum computer on the cloud in 2016, and has since deployed more than 90 quantum systems across the IBM Quantum Network, now home to more than 340 partner organizations worldwide

Rather than funding hardware directly, IBM Ventures is focusing its investment on the layers of the quantum stack where usability and integration actually determine whether a breakthrough translates into something enterprises can use, software tools that improve how quantum computers get programmed and optimized, algorithms that turn theoretical quantum advantages into tractable real world solutions, platforms bridging quantum and classical computing inside production environments, and orchestration architecture letting quantum systems operate as part of larger computational workflows. Target application areas include high energy physics, materials science, healthcare, optimization and sustainability. Beyond direct investment, IBM Ventures also backs founders through the University of Chicago's Duality accelerator, giving early stage quantum software companies access to IBM's own hardware and enterprise relationships, and through the Santander X Global Challenge, run jointly with Banco Santander, Bluzec and the Oxentia Foundation

The piece frames the urgency around IBM's own roadmap, the company expects applications that beat classical computing on accuracy, cost or efficiency to actually appear this year, tracked publicly through a community led Quantum Advantage Tracker, with full fault-tolerant quantum computing, systems that can run large scale computations even in the presence of errors, targeted for 2029. IBM points to progress on scalable, modular error correcting architecture as evidence that path is credible rather than aspirational. The underlying message is straightforward, enterprises across financial services, energy, healthcare and supply chain logistics are no longer just watching from the sidelines, they're actively experimenting and positioning now, and IBM Ventures wants its portfolio companies building the tools those enterprises will actually need already in place before that fault-tolerant milestone arrives
