Google Quantum AI announced it is accepting research proposals until 15 May 2026 for early access to its Willow quantum processor, the chip that made headlines in late 2024 by completing a benchmark calculation in five minutes that would take classical supercomputers longer than the age of the universe. Google says it is looking for high-impact research that could lead to significant scientific breakthroughs. This is the first time outside researchers have had a formal route to apply for time on Willow directly, rather than going through Google Cloud offerings. The deadline is tight and selection will be competitive.

About time. Having a chip that impressive sitting behind a single company is a waste. Let the broader research community at it

Proposals due 15 May and it is already the end of April. That is an extremely short runway for anyone who needs institutional sign-off

Wonder how much compute time each selected team actually gets. Early access can mean a lot of things

If even one of these research teams finds a real-world application it will justify the whole programme. Fingers crossed they pick good proposals
