Google is giving US college students a free year of Gemini AI Pro, worth about $240 dollars

Google announced this week that eligible college students in the United States can claim a full year of Google AI Pro at no cost, a plan that normally runs $19.99 dollars a month, alongside a newly redesigned student hub built inside the Gemini app. Students outside the US in more than 140 other markets get a comparable offer for Google AI Plus instead, Google's lower tier consumer subscription, and both versions must be redeemed by December 31 this year through student status verification handled by a service called SheerID.

The US tier specifically unlocks four times higher usage limits inside Gemini, access to an agent feature called Gemini Spark, Gemini integration across Google apps like Gmail and Docs, and five terabytes of cloud storage. The international AI Plus tier includes Gemini Omni along with twice the usage limits available to free users and 400 gigabytes of storage. Google is also offering a discounted bundle combining AI Pro with YouTube Premium for 8.99 dollars a month, a 70 percent discount available to eligible students for up to four years running.

Beyond the subscription giveaway, Google rolled out a broader set of study specific tools across both Search and the Gemini app timed specifically to the back to school period. The new student hub centers on adaptive study notebooks, flashcards, and practice quizzes built around actual coursework rather than open ended chat, and Google Search separately added practice quizzes developed with test prep companies covering nine different standardized exams. Google Lens also gained step by step coaching features meant to walk students through difficult problems rather than just supplying a final answer outright.

This isn't actually Google's first run at a student promotion. An earlier version of the same offer ran through 2025 and into early 2026 before closing on staggered regional deadlines, with the final US window expiring back in April. The roughly four month gap before this relaunch, combined with the timing right at the start of a new academic year, positions this squarely as a renewed push to make Gemini the default study habit for an entire fresh cohort of students, arriving right as Google works to close a benchmark gap against Anthropic's Claude Opus 5 and OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol at the actual frontier model tier
