Google has officially confirmed it will begin shutting down Google Assistant on Android and Wear OS starting September 4th, ending a full decade of service for the voice assistant that launched all the way back in 2016, Gemini will take over as the default assistant experience with genuinely no way to switch back once the transition hits a given device

The company began emailing existing Assistant users on August 4th with the news, stating plainly that Google Assistant is being discontinued and that Gemini, described as their next generation AI powered assistant, is now the assistant experience on Android, the rollout affects smartphones, tablets, Wear OS watches, compatible headphones and vehicles running Android Auto, though Google says the migration itself may take a few weeks to reach everyone worldwide, notably smart speakers, smart displays, Google TV and cars with Google built in are exempt from this specific shutdown and will keep Assistant for now

This timeline has actually already slipped once, Gemini was originally meant to fully replace Assistant by the end of 2025, but that deployment got pushed back to 2026, and even the March 2026 target Google mentioned when it announced the delay ended up sliding by another six months before finally landing on this September date

The genuinely frustrating part for a lot of existing users is that several specific Assistant capabilities have no confirmed Gemini equivalent yet, Interpreter Mode, which enabled real time two way spoken translation across 26 languages, was actually already removed from Assistant earlier this year without being replaced, and reporting suggests gaps remain around things like routines, reminders, podcasts, radio and certain music service integrations that people built their daily Android habits around
