The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking inaugurated EuroQCS-Spain today, its fifth quantum computer deployed across Europe. Combined with PIAST-Q in Poland, VLQ in the Czech Republic, Euro-Q-Exa in Munich, and Lucy near Paris, Europe now has operational hybrid quantum-HPC infrastructure in five countries covering trapped ion, superconducting, and photonic architectures.

The deployment strategy is explicit about diversity: no single qubit architecture, no single country, no single vendor. The aim is to give European researchers access to the widest possible variety of quantum platforms while building the experience base needed to determine which technologies will dominate.

Five quantum computers across five European countries with five different architectural approaches is a sovereign quantum strategy that is coherent and well-executed. The diversity is deliberate not accidental

WhatUQuant

Hybrid quantum-HPC integration is the correct near-term architecture. Pure quantum hardware is not yet sufficient for most problems. Coupling it with classical supercomputers gets useful output from current NISQ devices

Spain joining Germany, France, Poland, and Czech Republic in the EuroHPC quantum network is the EU quantum infrastructure buildout happening at pace most observers outside Europe are not tracking

The governance framework putting multiple qubit technologies under single access portals means European researchers do not have to choose an architecture before they understand which works for their problem

EuroHPC expanding its mandate to include AI Gigafactories alongside quantum means the European sovereign compute strategy is genuinely integrated rather than treating AI and quantum as separate programmes
