The big win here is that longer support only matters if the rest of the phone can survive that long. A handset that gets six years of security patches but needs a battery replacement after three is still a bit of a mixed bag.

The repair side could be more important than the headline lifespan. If replacing a battery or charging port becomes a normal, reasonably priced job rather than a manufacturer-approved adventure, people might actually keep phones for five years instead of three.
