Enterprise quantum spending just overtook government and academic spending combined for the first time

A Boston Consulting Group report based on responses from more than 200 large companies found that enterprise spending on quantum computing hit roughly 300 million dollars in 2025, pushing total market spend to around 550 million dollars and meaning corporate money now outweighs the combined total spent by governments and research labs for the first time. That's a genuine inflection point for a technology that has spent most of its existence funded almost entirely by public research budgets.

The adoption numbers by sector are striking. 92 percent of top global finance and insurance firms, 56 percent of major healthcare and pharmaceutical companies, and 52 percent of industrial companies have all invested in quantum computing in some form, whether through proof of concept projects, vendor partnerships, internal hiring, or direct venture investment.

BCG's data shows the depth of commitment growing too, not just the number of companies dabbling. More than 60 percent of surveyed enterprises are now spending over 1 million dollars annually on quantum computing, up 11 percent from BCG's 2022 survey, and companies spending above that 1 million dollar threshold are three times more likely to actually develop their own intellectual property and twice as likely to be simultaneously experimenting with AI or engaged in a public private partnership.

Proof of concept activity has genuinely accelerated too. BCG counted a 50 percent increase in the number of quantum proofs of concept compared to two years earlier, totaling 150 projects spread across 100 different enterprises by the end of 2024, which suggests companies are moving past pure exploratory interest into actually testing specific use cases against their own real business problems.

BCG frames 2030 as a plausible commercial inflection point where the market could reach somewhere between 2.5 and 5 billion dollars. And their own framing is pointed directly at company leadership, arguing that the specific businesses defining high value use cases and building real internal capability today are the ones that will actually determine where quantum value gets captured, rather than those simply waiting for the technology to mature on its own
